Transferring Video and Photos from your iPhone to your PC

If your company is anything like mine, you were issued a Windows laptop and an iPhone when you started... An iPhone that can take high resolution photos and high quality HD video making it the perfect tool for taking on-the-go photos and videos to add to your elearning.
But how do you get the photos and videos from your phone to your PC? You could email it to yourself, but the downside of taking such high res photos and HD video is the file size.
It can take forever to email something to yourself and what if you took 30 pictures? That could take at least a couple hours. There's a much faster solution! All you need is your computer, your iPhone and your iPhone charging cable.
1. On your computer, open the Windows Explorer folder that you want to save the photo or video file in.
2. Plug the USB end of the charging cable into your computer.
3. Unlock your iPhone.
4. Plug the other end of the charging cable into your iPhone.
5. A message appears on your iPhone asking if you want to Trust This Computer? Tap Trust.

6. On your computer, the AutoPlay window opens for the Apple iPhone. You have a few options:

  • Import pictures and videos using Windows (not recommended - less control)
  • Open device to view files using Windows Explorer (recommended - most control)
  • Microsoft Word using Microsoft Word (not recommended - copying pictures into Word degrades the quality)
7. Select Open device to view files. This option allows us to drag and drop files from Windows Explorer.
8. Windows Explorer opens the iPhone, showing the Internal Storage. Double Click the Internal Storage icon.
9. Inside internal storage is the DCIM folder. Double Click to open.
10. Photos and Videos are organized inside folders within the DCIM folder. 11. Your folders will look different than what is seen here. Double Click any folder to see the contents.
11. Select any photo, screen shot or video and drag it into the folder you opened in step 1.
12. The file is copied. The original remains on your iPhone.

Call to Action: Now that you know how to transfer your photos and videos, it's time to practice! Take some pictures around your office, some video of your pets and transfer it on to your computer. When you're done, post a comment below and tell me:

  • Was this simple or challenging?
  • Were there any surprises?
  • How will you use this tip in your future training materials?

I can't wait to hear from you!
